A Gentle Reminder: the T Word

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service), of course, is the U.S. equivalent of our CRA, the Canadian Revenue Agency.

As American statesman Ben Franklin once wrote, "in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

In Canada, you can file your taxes on paper or through Netfiiling, which could be either tedious, doing it by yourself, or expensive, if you hire a professional. The good news is that there are number of free government-certified software available, including  SimpleTax, GenuTax, and StudioTax. Those with iPhones or Androids can consider using SnapTax.

Pencil this into your calendar: There's a deadline to file your taxes, April 30. And there are other tax-related deadlines as well. Don't be late!

NewsLINC Spring Edition - Invitation

It's time again to draft, edit, and submit your articles for the next edition of NewsLINC!

Please look over the following topics and pick one you'd like to write on. Post your draft to your blog by February 15th, and we'll work on it together.

Category	Description / Idea Prompts
Activity	Submissions reflecting sports and leisure activities.
Arts	Submissions related to the arts (visual arts, crafts, design, dance, film, literature, music, theatre). ·         Write a short story or poem. ·         Share your artistic talent/hobby. ·         Provide a review of your favourite book / movie / artist / etc.
Bio	Student profiles that exclude information about birth date or age.
Canada	Submissions which highlight Canada. ·         How do you describe Canada to your friends or family living abroad? ·         What do you like about living in Canada? ·         Write about a famous Canadian personality, landmark, historical event, etc. ·         Recommend places to visit or day trips in Ontario / Canada

Settlement	Student settlement stories. ·         Share a funny story about settling in Canada ·         What has surprised you the most? ·         What are some of the challenges you have faced? ·         What or who has helped you to adjust?
Skills	Tips, challenges and experiences related to finding work, working or learning in Canada. ·         Workplace culture ·         Looking for work / networking / volunteering ·         Studying / learning new skills

NewsLINC Winter 2013 - Congrats Adelfa and Shohreh!

One of the greatest joys of my being a LINC Home Study teacher is to announce the publication of my students' works in NewsLINC. And this month, I have the pleasure of highlighting the writings of Shohreh and Adelfa (below):

I hope everybody will take the time to read not only our classmates' pieces but the rest of the articles in the latest NewsLINC, too.

Old Comers and New Comers

Welcome to our short study on Canada's Aboriginal peoples!

1. Watch this video, read the comments, and copy out the 5 placarded slogans onto your blog.
2. Check out this article and compare the treatment of Aboriginal peoples to how new immigrants are treated by the federal government. Write your thoughts on your blog.
3. Read and study this article, and record your reading of its first three paragraphs on Vocaroo.com. Then embed the Vocaroo recording on your blog.

BONUS: When you have finished the above, enjoy watching this CBC series on the aboriginal peoples. Be sure to click on the CC button for closed captioning.

For Business, Which Do You Prefer to Jump in: A Shark`s Tank or Dragon`s DenÉ

Everybody has a business idea. But not every body will survive a shark's tank or dragon's den.


 

1. Watch and Discuss the Top 5 Pitches on Dragons’ Den. Then read and discuss the upcoming auditions with two partners. 
2. Listening and role play with a partner: Corporate Image.
3. Watch this video and write a Business Plan on your blog (leaving out any trade secrets).
4. Read about and discuss with two partners the TiEQuest winners of 2010 – 2012.
5. Finally, watch a couple of random episodes from Shark Tank. Write your comments below on how you would compare this program with Dragons' Den.
